The Porter County Council on Aging started in the spring of 1958 under the leadership of the Valparaiso Business & Professional Women’s Club. Their purpose was to draw attention to special needs and problems of the aging.

Ever since, PCACS has been finding resources and providing programs and services to help the aging. During that time we have developed coalitions and partnered with many groups and organizations; Porter County United Way, Porter County Community Foundation, Northwest Indiana Community Action Corporation, Northwestern Indiana Regional Development Corporation, Porter County Council, NIPSCO, REMC, Rebuilding Together, Porter Hospital, the cities of Portage and Valparaiso, the township trustees, sororities, churches, assisted living centers, and many other not-for-profits that are part of thePorter County United Way family.

During that time our service population has grown to include not only the aging but those with disabilities and those in financial need. Our mission has remained fairly constant during that time, emphasizing compassionate service, improving quality of life, and maintaining independence and dignity for the client.

Working at PCACS is rewarding. When quality services are provided to those that really need them one can feel the satisfaction that comes from helping individuals who can no longer do for themselves what they need or want to do. We should always remember that almost everyone will need someone’s help at some time in their life. The goal should be to help those truly in need.

Porter County is such a great place to live and work; so many compassionate caring people, so many great resources and organizations. I feel really blessed to have been planted here.  Thank you everyone for making Porter County great.
